It's posted. Maybe I need a beta? I should ask the other Trick-or-Treaters on my main DW. Usually I get my stuff beta'ed but this is more casual than most exchanges.

I want to pick up an extra prompt or two, but first comes Yuletide signup, which has to happen sometime tomorrow. The signups theoretically don't end until 5 a.m. Sunday my time, but I am not coherent at that hour.

Worked until about 8 p.m., didn't get home 'til nearly 9. No creativity happening tonight.

My head is stuffed with thousands of content items that I am trying to help migrate from Rhythmyx to Drupal.

First pass through the tagset resulted in (I kid you not) more than 25 items in which I had at least *some* serious interest, although that may result in nothing more serious than "make sure you remember someone wanted this in case you have time to write treats."

I realized also that most of my interest was in writing for others. I've had such mixed results with my requests lately.

I may make the maximum number of requests. You can only request 0-4 characters in each, which is probably just as well.

I need to limit my offers to something I wouldn't mind re-reading between now and the beginning of December, which means nothing longer than a trilogy. I was pleased to see Gin Hale's "Rifter" series and Rosemary Kirstein's "Steerswoman" series, but they're much too long to re-read thoroughly in that amount of time, especially considering how fast I ripped through them the first time each (hmm, read both series on vacation too: different vacations, of course).

I wrote 438 words! And I am not done, so I will easily make the minimum (300 words for this exchange).

It's coming very naturally, which I like. I had a basic idea what I wanted to do, and my brain is producing what it likes, making it up as it goes along.

I made a new icon, too (used for this post).

chomiji: Chibi of Tenpou Gensuit from Saiyuki Gaiden, reading a scroll (tenpou - job)

Work was even more busy, if that is possible, and I had a lousy night's sleep last night. But the mood was better at the office: people were actually working together.

I just went through the ebook of the canon for my Trick or Treat story and marked all the relevant passages. I still like putting sticky notes in actual books better, but this is all I've got for this one.

So I should actually be able to start committing words tomorrow.

In related news, Yuletide signups opened. So for some unknown reason I went to look at Yuletide Coal. Waste of time, cho.

chomiji: Akari, the shaman from SDK ... more to her than you might imagine (Akari - autumn colors)

Work sucked in all kinds of ways today. It's complicated: we've been trying to re-do a 13-year-old, 4000+ content items intranet website, and we're not getting an awful lot of support on it.

Headache too: maybe my glasses need to be changed around again (I wear trifocals). Poring over a data dump in a spreadsheet to figure out what got left out of the content migration scheme didn't help.

Anyway, I'm musing over my next writing work, which is my Trick or Treat exchange assignment. Like most exchanges, it's a secret, so I'm only going to be able to make cryptic references to what and how I'm doing. It's an obscure but intriguing prompt about the history of a secondary character in the canon work, and it involves world-building. I don't want to build out too much because it might be invalidated if the author does a sequel. I may need to go back to my Kindle and review/flag relevant sections. I know what the character interactions are going to be like, though.

I also spent a shameful amount of time playing with my completed 100-drabble collection. The new AO3 search options allowed me to essentially isolate it by setting a word limit (I didn't usually write drabbles until I started that challenge), and then I could sort by hits, kudos, bookmarks, etc. Unsurprisingly for those who know me, the biggest winners were Saiyuki stories, but Stand Still Stay Silent was the runner-up.

The End!

I had forgotten to tag the story about Reynir from Stand Still Stay SIlent and the wind with the collection information, so I was going crazy this evening trying to figure out which prompt I'd skipped, because I was on the last prompt as far as I could tell, yet it was only story #99 according to the automated numbering on AO3. So I had to re-number the last few in their titles.

So this is back to the beginning, I think maybe my third or fourth manga : another all-but-orphaned series by Kazuya Minekura, who also created Saiyuki and its prequel, Saiyuki Gaiden. This takes place just after the last scene in the collected manga, vol. 6.

Hmm, a little awkward, I think.

*Much* better this time. I'm pretty pleased with this one: it's the kind of thing I hope to accomplish with a drabble.

ETA: AH HA HA HA! I forgot to make this one part of the collection, and so my numbering was off, and I had to re-number them!

#99 - Wind
Characters: Reynir Árnason, Lalli Hotakainen

Not so pleased with this one, but then I *am* getting to the dregs of the prompts I'd skipped earlier when I found them uninspiring. I'm also picking the lead/POV characters with a random process so that they wouldn't all be the same. Reynir is kind of annoying sometimes.

Yesterday was a bust because by the time I felt like writing, it was bedtime.

Most of the rest of today was spent at the town's Street Festival, meeting with the architect who's designing our house remodeling project, and doing wash. I have finished my canon re-read and think I know what I'm going to write for Trick or Treat. Three more drabbles and I'll have finished all 100.

OK, again, this is not a fandom that I think most here know. Alliance-Union is a loosely connected set of science fiction novels about an interstellar conflict between Earth and its colonies in outer space. On the planet Cyteen, a group of scientists has set up cloning as an industry to provide labor to allow expansion on their semi-habitable planet and beyond. These cloned slaves (for that is what they really are) are known as azi.

In opening chapters of the novel Cyteen, in the science city Reseune, a brilliant and dictatorial researcher named Ariane Emory is murdered. A few years later, in Reseune's labs, a little girl named Ariane Emory is born ... and proceeds to grow up in very strange circumstances.

Hmmm, I don't know that anyone else here follows SSSS. It's a great webcomic, though it starts slowly.

chomiji: Matsumoto Rangiku from Bleach, looking sad (Rangiku - sad thoughts)

I know what I want to write for my next drabble, but I'm short on sleep and it's not happening. I need to read some more of my canon re-read for Trick or Treat and get some sleep.

Laters, my friends.

OK, this could be spoiler-ish for the last published bit of the series (which was still made public some 2 years ago, IIRC).

I think I'd like to write something at least 5 times per week, even if it's just a bit on a longer work.

Concrete-wise, I think I want to end up:

  1. Finishing my drabble series
  2. Writing my Trick or Treat assignment and at least two additional treats (those are due Oct. 24, so I need to watch the calendar)
  3. Responding to at least three requests here (but I'm not promising specific lengths)
